I’ve received some inquiries regarding my lighting setup for the photo Passion for the Sport, so I thought I’d share it here on the blog. Here’s the setup: the keylight was a 5′ octobox with a grid to the top left of the model, a subtle fill light using an umbrella to the right and a light with a 20 degree grid for the background.
The grid on the octobox kept the light focused and away from the background for some of my other shots. The fill adds that touch of light on the right side of his face, helping define the jaw bone. The background light for this composition goes fairly unnoticed. It simply created a color/texture difference between the deep shadows on the model and the black background.
Here is a close up at 50% scale so you can see the fill on the right.

It’s a simple setup and can look very different depending on your lighting ratios.
Awesome surprise to find one of my photos in the current Hot Shots emailer. Many thanks.
I am not an architectural photographer but I’m learning to embrace it. lol. Last weekend was a fun time doing just that. Shooting things that didn’t move, for a change.

She knows her archi. I have lots to learn from her.
I shot at night for the first time. I think I’m hooked. These are the colors of this shot. No over saturation… just a crazy long exposure. I have much to learn about night photography but this was a fun start.
Oh, and one more thing… my Nikon D300 did just grand at ISO 100 but I can’t wait to see what the 5D II would do
A couple of weeks ago I rented a studio space for a day. Along with a makeup artist, I had only 3 models but lots of concepts in mind. It was a long day but seriously, it just fly by. I didn’t actually shoot everything I set out to shoot but I’m happy with what we got accomplished for the day. Here are a few of my favorites. You can view and purchase these and others in the series here.
