B&W vs Color
Wednesday, March 4th, 2009Making the decision to convert an image to black and white is not always easy. Sometimes it’s done purely for technical reasons… maybe the origin color version just doesn’t work… too busy or maybe you need to hide something like chromatic aberration and you don’t know how to correct it with your software(correcting it is another blog post). This image is fine in color. I like it a lot but the black and white version, in my opinion, focuses more on the light in this image and adds to the overall mood.
More on Suspended in WA
Saturday, February 28th, 2009This past weekend we had the opportunity to work with some of the best talent in Seattle. It marks our first production as Suspended Image.™ Melding all talents… beauty, fashion, lifestyle and architecture… we wanted to showcase the hairstyles with our own style.
It was a full and productive day of shooting, laughter and fun. At the end of the day, I’m sure we were all a bit achy… I sure was
Here’s the client goofing around posing for us in the silhouette above
I was the main shooter for the day but Candice somehow managed to push me out of the way (haha) and get some beautiful shots.
Here are some candids and behind the scene shots.

Lighting for Athletic Portrait
Tuesday, February 10th, 2009I’ve received some inquiries regarding my lighting setup for the photo Passion for the Sport, so I thought I’d share it here on the blog. Here’s the setup: the keylight was a 5′ octobox with a grid to the top left of the model, a subtle fill light using an umbrella to the right and a light with a 20 degree grid for the background.
The grid on the octobox kept the light focused and away from the background for some of my other shots. The fill adds that touch of light on the right side of his face, helping define the jaw bone. The background light for this composition goes fairly unnoticed. It simply created a color/texture difference between the deep shadows on the model and the black background.
Here is a close up at 50% scale so you can see the fill on the right.

It’s a simple setup and can look very different depending on your lighting ratios.
Megaday of Shooting
Monday, January 26th, 2009A couple of weeks ago I rented a studio space for a day. Along with a makeup artist, I had only 3 models but lots of concepts in mind. It was a long day but seriously, it just fly by. I didn’t actually shoot everything I set out to shoot but I’m happy with what we got accomplished for the day. Here are a few of my favorites. You can view and purchase these and others in the series here.
